Today is April 22. A day chosen to celebrate the earth worldwide – Earth Day. Earth Day was founded in 1970, as a way to promote love and respect for the planet and help to bring awareness to environmental issues that we humans are creating.
Wow, I didn’t realize that Earth Day was founded in 1970, until I did some research recently. I think today is a good day to reflect on our environmental progress as a nation and as individuals.
I know I do many things different in my life today, than I did in the 70’s, 80’s, and even the 90’s. I’m certainly living more green. I try to reduce the amount of waste I generate, reuse what I can, recycle, I don’t use chemicals on our property, I have quit using most of the harshes chemicals in my house for cleaning, I use my own bags at the grocery store – most of the time these days, and we have our own chickens for eggs and meat.
I’m glad my habits have changed in ways that are better for the planet and the next generations that follow me – us. But I’m still not doing enough, but I’m doing the best I can for now.
I don’t want to get on a soap box. I just want to bring some awareness to Earth Day, and invite you to think about Earth Day and invite you to participate in Earth Day. There are lots of enjoyable things you can do for Earth Day. Even it is as simple as taking a walk with family and/or friends today and appreciating the beauty and splendor of life. This would we a great beginning and enjoyable way to spend the day.
In fact, there is a whole movement (Picnic for the Planet) out there that is promoting Picnics on Earth Day. People are having small to very large picnics everywhere. What a great idea. To learn more about this movement, check out Picnic for the Planet.
Another interesting group out there is The Earth Day Network. They are promoting A Billion Acts of Green. Awesome! There is lots of information on their web site. I just found this link this morning, and it looks really interesting. They have a link to a group called the “Women and the Green Economy” (WAGE™), which looks interesting, but I don’t know much about it.
The Earth Day Network has lots of links to various projects and groups. If you are interested in learning more about the Earth Day and living more Green, I think you may find something on this web that will interest you.
There is even an Earth Day flag. The first Earth Day flag was made from recycled items. Here is a picture of the Earth Day flag:
I like that this flag promotes the awareness and well being of the Earth, since the Earth is our home and vital to all life here. It is a universal symbol for all of us.
The Earth Day Flay represents something that we all have in common and we all have an invested interested in – Our Planet, and it doesn’t matter who we, where we come from, what religion we follow, how rich or how poor we are, we can all come together on this issue of ensuring the health of this planet for ourselves and all the generations to come. We can think of the Earth Day Flag as The Flag of the People.
If you chose to do something today or this weekend in recognition of Earth Day, consider posting what you chose to do. It is amazing the creative ways that people come up with to celebrate Earth Day.
Enjoy!
Creator God gave us this earth to tend and we (myself included) have been so neglectful over the years. In the past few years I have cleaned out all chemicals from my house, use my own cloth grocery bags and whenever I am out walking or hiking I pick up trash from the side of the road or on hiking trails. Let’s make the earth a better place for the next generation and teach our children & grandchildren to respect the earth, too.
A Billion Acts of Green…I love it!
😉
Thank you for sharing — and happy Earth Day to us all.
Happy Earth Day. Congrats on Freshly Pressed.
Oh, thank you so much for choosing me for Freshly Pressed. I’m thrilled. Happy Earth Day.
When you go to the Google homepage you can see that they have a really nice logo in celebration of Earth Day!
Great post! I’m both proud and ashamed to admit that I just recently started recycling. I think it’s the thought that my daughter will have to live in this world i’ve created long after I’m gone. Thank you for the Earth Day post. It’s the first I’ve seen all week!
I just had my “consumption” lifestyle post done last night, great to know that it coincided with earth day.
Great post.
Celebrate Earthday and learn about biodegradable plastics! http://www.scishark.com/earthday/
I like your idea of the Earth Day flag as the Flag of the people.
Congrats on being freshly pressed!

Ah yes, I’m off to write my own Earth Day post. Tree huggers unite!
Great post–Congrats on being FPed. And Happy Earth Day to all of us! I appreciate all the links. I, too, wrote a post today about Earth Day, noting that I am doing some things now but not as many as I expected to be when Earth Day started. A picnic today sounds great–I always relish forays into Nature. I recycle, reuse, do many of the easier things. Recently I have started being a greener shopper through an online company. Thanks for the challenge to do more! Together we can make a difference. I found this quote on a greeting card once, by someone named Reese; it’s one of my favorites: “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you have never tried to sleep, in a tent, with a mosquito.”
Remember, Every Day is Earth Day!!!
Happy Earth Day, may we be good stewards for our children!
Great piece and congrats on being FP’d! I am not happy with efforts in congress to weaken the Environmental Protection Agency and to avoid regulating greenhouse gas emissions that climate change caused. Congrats againg!!
todos los dias es dia de la tierra!! So Earth day is always!! I hope more people learn that earth deserves our care every day 😉
Congrats on FP!!! That’s how I found you. Nice post.
Good write-up and great links! I have been recycling everything for a few years now, and could not even imagine not doing it now… funny how quickly your thoughts and habits change…
Happy Earth Day to all bloggers. My simple way of contributing to the effort is tiny little gestures which dont cost us anything but would help the planet a lot if everyone joined in. Nothing dramatic. Simple things like switching off my pc after use. removing plugs of batter chargers, rationing tv time (which has many other obvious benefits) and my favourite is walk to my work.
Cheers,
That Earth flag is really the kind one cannot draw. I prefer another one, much more simple : just type “flag of planet earth” on Google and it is the two first results.
It is the third for that same request on Google image.
we should protect earth
Happy Earth Day Kay! Continue your green lifestyle and let’s give our share to make this world beautiful again! 🙂
Happy earth day = Save earth everyday. No plastic, nuclear, Illegal Logging, etc, But … Plant … Plant … forest …
i think doing something is more important then celebrating last year i took a step towards the wastage of water now i have developed a habbit of saving water and now nobody in my home waste water.
we wash our car from the water of washing machine so if you want to take some steps then only you can celebrate it otherwise there is no other reson for it
“doing something is more important then celebrating”
I think this just captures the spirit of the movement. Do your bit and dont worry that it´s just a bit!
Cheers,

I feel abit clueless and forgot Earth Day. But anyway, we went for a 40 kms. bike ride in beautiful weather. It wasn’t special for Earth Day: we don’t have a car. So our whole lifestyle in abit of Earth Day every day. We just don’t think of it in that way.
It’s more for selfish reasons: staying healthy. If it helps the environment, great.
Happy earth day bloggers.
This is really a nice post on everyone’s awakening!
Happy earth day,KAY. Thanks for letting me to know about it. by the way, Your writing English is so underdtandable for non-native english speakers like me . I think your grammer is the same as I learned in school. thanks for beautiful English!

Happy Earth day!. . . Sorry a day late =).
We conduct a program to celebrate Earth Day this April 28 in Riau, Indonesia…
I like your post, there is a nice message here. I am trying to go green, as we all need to.
Yes…all the States should think a lot about the Earth…They should cut any connections with the lobbies…but that’s almost impossible…Anyway everyone should make a small effort to help our planet…I bought some solar Panel and try to use les energy I can…(I know…it’s not enough…) Thanks for sharing your point of views.
Cheers
I’m glad someone wrote and expressed their love our great planet! Too often we overlook the simple pleasures that are within 5 minutes of our homes. It would be nice to have everyone just take a half hour out of their busy schedules to enjoy the scenery with someone.
That’s okay…you can get on your soapbox. It’s a good soapbox to be on. I think every day should be “Earth Day”. Great post.
Thanks for introducing me to the Earth Day Network.
In recognition of Earth Day, I have shared my microscopic acts as responses to Mother Earth’s Call to save the planet in my blog entry, The Struggling Servant of Mother Nature (http://yobynos.wordpress.com/2011/04/15/the-struggling-servant-of-mother-nature/).
This is the first time I pasted a link on my comment and it feels awkward. Howbeit, I just really want to let you know I am supporting and raising the EARTH DAY FLAG.
Hi I love celebrating earth day!
Eventhough the guy who invented it was called senator Gaylord Nelson
