Carpenter Bee News

This is a beautiful spring.  Right now everything is a luscious green.  So vibrant.  So full of life.  So full of beauty.

The red bud trees and wisteria vines are in full bloom off the mountain here.  Our wisteria vines are just starting to bloom.  When we went to town last, the air was pregnant of the sweet smell of wisteria vines and peppered in among the wisteria scent was the sweet scent of fresh cut spring grass.  Wow!  I love the smell of spring..

Carpenter Bees have shown up in abundance this year.  This time of year they are very busy.  The females are busy building nest(s) in our wooden porch and the males are busy fighting each other and protecting the females.   The males are buzzing around at hyper speeds, like humming birds.  They dive bomb one other other and come so close to us that you are sure they are going crash right into you and most of the time they don’t – smile.  We love watching them carry out their ancient rituals of life.  It is just down right peaceful.

A lot of people are not comfortable with bees and some are down right freaked out by them.  I realize that people can have pretty bad allergic reactions to bee stings.  No one in our house has such allergies, but we have two neighbors who are allergic to bees and I’m always so please that when bees come around they are so calm and rarely are stung.  One of the neighbors is a man in his 30’s and the other is a girl of 12.  The bees seem to sense our calmness or lack of it and they respond to it.

My father had taught me that if we befriend the life that is around us, like bees, they will not harm us very much or at all.  I was taught to strive to live in balance with the life that is around me and do it in the best possible ways.

Carpenter bees are a good way for people who aren’t comfortable with bees to become more comfortable, because it is generally the males that you see bopping around and they don’t have stingers.  How cool.  The females have stingers.  You may be asking yourself, how do I know males from females, well it is easy.  Males have white faces and females have black faces.  The genius that exist in all of life.  How wonderful.

Carpenter bees are prolific pollinators, which is good for all of life.  Some say that if the bees were to disappear, that all life on this planet would disappear with in 3 years.  I don’t know if this is true, but it makes sense to me and I’m sure life would disappear with the disappearance of our bee relations.  All things are connected, whether we can see/understand those connection.

The bees need to make a living like the rest of us.  If you don’t need to harm them, then don’t.  Let them be (no pun intended) and sit back on the porch and enjoy their ancient rituals of living life.  You’ll see their beauty if you look for it.

  1. Nice blog, Kay and very interesting info about the carpenter bees…I think they are the coolest bees because they just go about their business doing what God created them to do…However, try telling this stuff to Stevie Mullis, he’s like the mad terminator on a mission when he sees them boring into our wood beams.
